Every one of Stag Bakeries’ delicious, handmade treats braves an ocean crossing before being delivered to us here on the mainland.
They were already widely respected for their delicious water biscuits before they came up with the idea of putting Hebridean seaweed into the mix.
And because the company believes in locally-sourced goods, the blend of local seaweed they use has a taste that can only be found in the waters near Lewis.
General Manager Alasdair Maclean explained the thought behind this novel idea:
“We tried to do something that could not be replicated by anyone else, and by using ingredients that are unique to the island we feel as though we’ve accomplished that”.
Stag Bakeries is very proud to serve Lewis as an important part of the local community. A good example of this is that a large proportion of the island population is employed there, often joining as young, eager workers and going on to become highly skilled bakers.
To further serve the community, two mobile bakeries, are driven throughout the island, taking with them batches of fresh bread and rolls just as the morning sun rises.
Traditional delights such as crumbly shortbread, yummy oatcakes and sweet butterscotch cake are also lovingly crafted inside the bakery walls.
These are of such high quality that they are exported all over the globe, even as far as a small artisan store opposite the Bolshoi Theatre in Russia.
Not a thing Stag Bakeries craft is available in supermarkets, as they believe in creating smaller batches of extremely high quality goods.
This quality was made evident when in 2013 they won a Great Taste Award for Best Speciality Product for their seaweed water biscuits - and you’ll certainly realise why once you taste them.
