Back Up Trust is a UK-based national charity committed to supporting people who have sustained a spinal cord injury (SCI) as well as their families. Back Up is also the only UK spinal cord injury charity with specialist support for children and young people with SCI. Anyone can sustain a SCI, regardless of sex, ethnicity, age, or any other characteristic, and they can be sustained in a number of ways, including complications from medical conditions like cancer, medical malpractice, and accidents.
Spinal cord injury can be a life-altering event, affecting not just physical mobility but also mental well-being, relationships, and the ability to live independently. Back Up understands these challenges and offers a wide range of tailored services to meet the unique needs of each individual. Their support is rooted in lived experience—many of their team members, volunteers, and mentors have personal experience of spinal cord injury, which helps create a strong sense of understanding and community.
The charity offers life skills and wheelchair skills training, peer mentoring, and residential activity courses that help participants push their boundaries and rediscover what’s possible. Back Up also provides dedicated support for children and young people with spinal cord injuries, helping them stay connected with their education, build friendships, and navigate life after injury with positivity and resilience. Their services extend to family members as well, offering guidance and emotional support to those who play a vital role in the recovery process.
Back Up empowers people to take control of their lives and believe in a future that goes beyond their injury. Through community outreach, advocacy, and a strong commitment to inclusion, Back Up Trust continues to break down barriers and champion a world where everyone with a spinal cord injury can thrive.

The Scottish Book Trust is a national charity dedicated to transforming lives in Scotland through the power of reading and writing. Established in 1998 and based in Edinburgh, the organisation believes that fostering a love of reading from an early age can inspire creativity, enhance employment opportunities, improve mental health, wellbeing and help break the cycle of poverty. The Trust runs a range of life-changing literacy programmes that bring the benefits of reading and writing to everyone across Scotland.
These programs include Bookbug, which offers free books and resources to families with young children, and Reading Schools, which encourages
schools to embed a reading culture and support children to read for pleasure.
Since 2020, Scottish Book Trust has distributed over 300,000 books
to children and families in need through food banks, community hubs, and other
charities across Scotland. The organisation also supports Scotland's writers
through various initiatives, including the New Writers Awards, which provide professional development opportunities for emerging authors.
Additionally, Scottish Book Trust works with schools, libraries, nurseries, and other community groups to maximise accessibility and inclusivity in all its programmes. Through all of its work, the Scottish Book Trust aims to ensure that everyone in Scotland has equal access to books and the many benefits they bring.
